but to describe Birmingham (a) as "hellishly difficult" is stretching the bounds of credulity.

Wet Spam were unlucky in that the sides above them all nicked enough points to keep out of trouble (Bolton, 1 defeat in last 9; Villa, 2 defeats in last 8; Leeds, 4 wins from last 7 and even Fulham got 3 wins from last 6).

Most seasons there is one side that drops like a stone and gets involved very late on; the bottom 3 in that season was unchanged from Boxing Day. The Spammers came close to escaping, but not close enough.
