It's not being "anal" at all.

If someone is speaking a second/foreign language and their mistakes aren't corrected their progress in that language will be slowed significantly. Rather the same way I learned to speak Arabic and I was very greatfull for being corrected.

However, you are correct in that I do not speak Mandarin or whichever of the the Chinese languages it is that is David's mother tongue.
