(as I remember - I was 18 at the time!)
The Marines attacked his 20-year-old son and were giving him a hiding. Dad saw it and jumped in with a punch. Then they killed the Dad. Defence centred around 1) that hitting the kerb killed him and 2) that they couldn't prove that the first punch wasn't the one that killed him, and that one was "in self defence" as he had thrown the first punch (regardless of the fact that they had been beating up his son beforehand).
