Doesn't surprise me

There are a few idiots of all ages but by far the most entrenched racist views I've come across, as well as virtually all "real racism", as opposed to a couple of lads trying to be hard/controversial/clever but who give in as soon as you start arging the toss with them, are in their 50s or 60s (or older).

By saying that, am I being ageist?

You did the right thing to challenge them. Keeping quiet is the same as tacitly supporting their views. Well done.
