I have just been given my first Ipod

I am a bit frightened of it

How can I use it on a computer which one of my children already uses for Itunes without it "syncing" the whole of their library onto my pod (I don't want all that pop, thank you) or syncing the whole of my library onto their pod (they feel the same about Albinoni)?
