CITY boss Glenn Roeder today went back to his roots in appointing former Watford colleague Stuart Murdoch as the Canaries' new goalkeeping coach.

Murdoch begins work immediately and fills the post vacated by James Hollman earlier this month.

"I'm delighted that Stuart has decided to join us as our new goalkeeping coach," Roeder told canaries.co.uk. "I've worked with Stuart at Watford and he is an excellent football man and I believe he will gel well with the other members of the coaching staff as we look to take the Club forward."

Murdoch is perhaps best known for his spell as manager of MK Dons - then known as Wimbledon - between 2002 and 2004.

Formerly their goalkeeping coach, he took over as manager from Terry Burton but found his reign severely hampered by the club going into administration and was forced to sell many of his top players, including midfielder Damien Francis to the Canaries.

Murdoch left the Dons in November 2004 after relegation to League One, and the following summer he joined Bournemouth as their goalkeeping coach, only to find himself appointed caretaker manager in September 2006 when long-serving boss Sean O'Driscoll quit for Doncaster Rovers.

Murdoch returned as goalkeeping coach when Kevin Bond took charge, but has now jumped at the chance to rejoin Roeder in the Championship, for whom he worked as assistant and reserve team boss during the Canary manager's stint in the Hornets' hot-seat in the early 1990s.
"I'm very pleased to be given the opportunity to get back into Championship football," said Murdoch. "I'll be working for a very good club and manager and look forward to helping get Norwich City Football Club back into territory that it's more familiar with."
