We were there in the summer for a day from Krakow (take a bus, the train takes about two weeks) - packed with tourists and baking hot. We hiked up into the mountains though - there's maps at the tourist info of various routes.
When was the last time you were in Krakow, Steve? One synagogue we went to as it was recommended to have a really good holocaust exhibition is being returned to it's original status. The guy there was saying that they wanted to get away from the holocaust theme - not forget it obviously; but not let it overshadow Jewish history and faith. Jewish quarter is really good for restaurants and bars and not so many tourists (especially the staggies) make it down there.
