You want to take in both Berlin *and* Madrid? It's about a three hour flight, so it's a hell of a long train ride!

My current favourite German city is Dresden. Magnificently restored Altstadt and very cosmpolitan Neustadt with some good bars and restaurants. And no f**king stag dos (well, the occasional German one).

Did Poland last summer and can recommend Krakow and Gdansk. Trains are cheap and reliable if somewhat slow, but get the best class you can afford (and, frankly, they're all affordable) as standard second class is not the most comfortable... Some really good quality accomodation too for reasonable cost. Surprisingly good beer and food too.
