Can someone remind what the point is of Jimmy Smith?

If we play him as a central midfielder he isn't cambative and not particularly creative. If we play him as a winger he has no pace, doesn't take on his man and isn't particularly good at crossing.

I've seen nothing from him to suggest why we should extend his loan in January
