As The Guardian article suggests, it affects good-natured fans as much as players.

If I'd been in a crowd where some people were singing that song at Sol Campbell, I'd have felt absolutely disgusted - firstly that people can be so unpleasant, and secondly that I was in the same group of fans and thus could be identified with it.

Which obviously would put me off going in the future. Which would be a shame as I love going to football matches.
