Could be overheating.

Could be a number of things really, ranging from being randomly buggered (that is it *is* buggered, rather than it has *been* buggered, but whatever.

Does it whirr much when you switch it on? If not it could be that the CPU/case fan has gone (happens fairly commonly) and needs replacing. That could cause exactly what you describe.
