DivX is a file format for video, like mp3 is for audio. There's a few video file formats, just like there are many different audio file formats.

It just so happens that with the DivX format you can squish a video down into a smaller amount of data than DVD format. The drawback is, if you try to put that DivX file on a disc your DVD player in the livingroom will likely not know how to play it.

So you use software to convert the file format from DivX to DVD - there's a prog called DVD Santa that does this, doubtless many others. Therefore you download 750Mb of divx, spen a couple of hours converting it to a 3-4 Gb DVD file, copy it onto a DVD and then you can play it in the living room on the telly.

You can actually buy hardware DivX players, that live under the telly like a DVD player, but they're not so common.
