The most anticipated fights of the 80s and 90s

I looked forward to Hagler/Leonard like little else before or since. Back then, you couldn't get these fights without waiting til they were broadcast on our three channels, which was often the following night: and at the time I worked with a notorious slackjaw who simply could not help but give away the results.

So, anxious to avoid having my enjoyment spoiled, I took the day off work, didn't buy a paper, and switched off the TV at any point where the result might've been given - missing the news, and even the gaps between programmes in case of a "and later there'll be a chance to see Hagler's sensational win" type announcement.

The boxing was ALWAYS on at 9:25pm, so I stuck the telly on at that point. No boxing. I flicked around the channels. Nothing. I 'phoned my bruv and asked "What time's the fight on?" He said "YOU MEAN YOU MISSED IT?".

yep - they'd put on a special programe at 8 o'clock, the c**ts.

The next fight that excited me to the same degree was Benn/McClennan, which was shown live while I was staying with a mate. Mate said he really wanted to go for a beer but there wasn't anywhere in town that was showing it. His missus said "Oh go on, Alan, he really misses drinking with you - go on, I'll tape the fight for you." I balked at that, but gave in when she looked me in the eyes and asked "Are you saying that you think I'm not capable of operating my own video?".

Meekly, I gave in, and went out.

And it turned out that she WAS incapable of operating her own video.

I'm still, very, sore about that.
