Honestly mate, I think it's more fear than anything else. Playing for their country has become so joyless, such a trial of nerves - and when players lack confidence, they often look not to be giving their all, even when they are. It's a bit like top-level sprinting: the key for the finest athletes is to run relaxed. If they tighten up, then the harder they try, the slower they become.
Also, as the "here we go again" panic sets in, I think their inclination is to hare around aimlessly, desperate to resurrect the situation - when what's needed is a bit of calm, a bit of leadership. But those who don't do this can't be accused of lacking passion: I've had huge admiration for Gary Neville over the past decade, and often seen him as our de facto captain, yet he doesn't even sing the anthem. Ditto managers like Wenger or Eriksson as opposed to Mourinho or Keegan. Everyone has their own natural way of doing things - but they all care hugely, I'm certain about that.
