Which is how they'd have got their money back: if they'd been able to prop up NR, and it had then been taken over. If they hadn't stepped in to guarantee NR's customers, the run on the bank would've been ten times greater, and would not only have finished off NR, but created such panic in the markets that recession could've been the result. So they took a risk: it doesn't look like paying off, but they can't predict the future (ie. that no-one would come in for NR), and as I see it, they've ended up damned if they did, damned if they didn't.
