**spoiler** I didn't get why

Charlie had to die though. Why didn't he come out of the little room then close the door thus protecting himself from the onslaught of water. Also, If that room was air tight as it seemed to be it would have stopped filling up once the level of water got above the portal because there would have been no way for the air to escape. At wich point he could have calmly swam out of the portal.
