...amongst its 'fans' were (and remain) Howard Wilkinson and the old Plough Lane Wimbledon-it stands for Position Of Maximum Opportunity and basically means if you have the ball in the oppositions penalty area as much as possible you then have as much time and chances as possible to socre a goal-the way to get the ball there as much as possible therefore being long and high punts up the field (hoooff!) to a "big man" with other players feeding off him.

Think of John Fashanu at Wimbledon, Lee Chapman at Leeds and Niall Quinn at Sunderland when Wilko was there for a short time.

Hughes was an FA Coach for a long long time and repeatedly pushed POMO forward as the most effective typw of football.
