An example from the mid 1980s

when I lived in NW London, couldn't afford to travel to the Fine City and had a girlfriend who supported QPR, so we wnt to most of their home games.

We sat in the Ellerslie Road Stand, with an atmosphere much like the River End (I felt quite at home). QPR were flagging and a woman shouted a comment along the lines of "get your finger out" at Gregory as he came over to take a throw in. Not abusive, just critical. He held the ball up to the crowd and shouted something like "If you can do better come down here". Arrogant prick indeed.

At the time I contrasted that to Gary Waddock, another QPR midfielder who, after losing a League Cup tie to Ipswich was bent over in the centre circle with his head in his hands before going to applaud the crowd (the rest of the team were heading off the pitch). Now that's the sort of player I want. Unfortunately, Waddock was not a good manager.
