I think the expression was first used in relation to architecture, which made sense because there was a "modernist" movement.
It is now used in all sorts of fields, with all sorts of shades of meaning
FWIW, I always think that the defining characteristic of post-modern attitudes in a social context is a suspicious (almost cynical) attitude towards structure or "accepted conventions" or "rules". Post-modernists are always saying "So?" when other people say that they have clear ideas of how things should be done. This is usually referred to as a "mistrust of meta-narratives" - ie post-modernists always question anyone's structural set-ups, including their own (which therefore gets messy).
