Depends on the job.

I know a someone who left school with no qualifications at all. He got a cleaning job in a factory, then realised he could do what the factory workers were doing and got a job ther. He is now a fairly senior manager in said place. He is a valuable contrubutor to his employer but, by the saforementioned employment criteria, would have been consigned to life on benefits, or menial jobs, anyway. (and I'm not talking about years ago either)
