there are salesmen who sell the subway franchise to people looking for an investment opportunity across the world. These people are paid on commission per subway opened, so it's in their interest to sell as many franchises in the centre of a city as possible. Each franchise owner sells fewer sandwiches as a result, but the salesmen don't care about that. It's the same with most of these chains - it's all about making money, not about customer satisfaction, quality of service or quality of end product.
