No they weren't punk, but JD were formed & Factory founded because of punk

(that legendary Sex Pistols gig where supposedly everybody in attendance formed a band).

Bad choices of names I would agree and never really explained by any of the members so far as I'm aware; but I never seriously considered them in any way Nazi sympathisers.
