The word "martyr" means "witness" in ancient Greek.

I think you'll find that all Christian martyrs were killed by other people for "witnessing" their faith, the earliest martyr being St Stephen.

There is something of a difference between being killed by others because of your faith, and deciding that your own faith requires you to kill yourself and other people.
