we signed him, he scored a lot of goals for us, and we got our money back plus a bit more when we sold him.
At the end of the day, that would generally be regarded as a decent deal. Yes, it could have been better but it could also have been a lot worse.
Surely a bad deal is where you acquire a player who turns out to be a flop and you can't get your money back.
If all our deals turn out like the Earnie one - successful player and a profit if they leave - we won't do too badly.
