You make a good point about the foiled attacks in Spain after the election and it's true that the Moors were there many centuries ago; so there was also symbolic meaning behind the attacks there. I'm not too familiar with the circumstances of the follow-up attacks and whether they were definitely going to take place & then foiled or whether they had been planned & suspended prior to the announcement of the pull-out.

While it's true that Al-Qaeda have been around for a long time (since at least the end of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan), Iraq and Afghanistan are significant for the UK, as our partaking in those actions are one of the reasons why we've become an inevitable target. The attacks you mention as preceding those invasions all targetted the US; although, as usual, innocents of other nationalities suffered (esp. in Kenya).
