We are a middle-sized club. We poach players from small clubs (Dave Striker, Cureton)
Sunderland are a big club. They poach players from midde-sized clubs (like us).
And if Earnie or DE do well they may move onto even bigger clubs that Sunderland or West Brom, possibly using release clauses.

That is the way of the football world.

Interesting that an improved contract offer was put to DE, which indicates that his departure was not as cast-iron as that of Earnshaw.
