The Three Dicksons I saw were very different.
“Crap Dickson” played at Luton, didn’t care, was rubbish, and got jeered off. We saw Crap Dickson for eighty minutes at home to Derby, and frustratingly only ten minutes of the other Dickson.
The game generally went on around Crap Dickson. Not motivated, not thinking and not wanting the ball.
I much preferred the second version, “Quality Dickson”; but he played when he wanted to. Chelsea away. Where the hell did that come from? Cardiff at home – remember that Berkampesque curling shot that won the game for us.
“End of Season Dickson”, a variation on Quality Dickson was the one we saw playing for Preston at the end of the 2003/4 season. He looked an excellent player in that game.
A scout in the stand, clubs sniffing around, agents talking to him and the new mega Sky deal just around the corner are just a few of the reasons for the appearance of End of Season Dickson at Norwich. I don’t think it was Peter Grant that got him playing. It was that shop window with a huge “Prem Sale” poster on.
If Dickson had stayed we would have seen plenty more of Crap Dickson. Quality Dickson might have appeared just before 31st August or for a Sky game. But we all know that he would soon become very disinterested and sulking at seeing his old mates raking in ten big ones a week in Prem.
No sour grapes here, (well maybe a little) but we are better off without him.
