We weren't far off getting relegated in 2000/1 too: the first half of the season was as scary as I can ever recall. Then a new manager with a totally different attitude came in mid-season, didn't do anything dramatic but started to plant seeds of optimism, then rebuilt the squad with a number of excellent signings. Remember what happened the following year?
