Went a couple of Chrimbos ago. Vietnam is brilliant and easy to wing it once you're there - there is a good infrastructure for getting around and cheap as chips. I can't recommend it enough. You'll need at least 3 weeks to get a taste of all three regions. Oh, and unless you do the central highlands, you don't need malaria jabs.

Laos I haven't been too, but apparently once out of the capital it's very basic indeed. But fantastic nonetheless.
