If they could swallow some pride

and come out and say "we made some mistakes in the last 2 years, and we apologise for those" it would do wonders for the morale of many fans IMHO.
You are right though, this is about as close as we'll come.
At the minute i'm lurching from depression to optimisim on an almost hourly basis, if we get another couple in (inlcuding Marshall) i'll be looking forward to next season.
