Yup, contradictions abound all across Italy

How can they take so much care over food and wine and then allow beautiful buildings to crumble? My theory is that the mafia and political corruption have bled it dry for decades leaving nothing over for any kind of useful forward planning or maintenance.

Best tip is to avoid the towns and cities except for a quick excursion to see historical or cultural sites and hit the countryside where the best places to stay and eat are and at far lower prices.
