Driving outside Catania & Palermo was OK apart from the odd idiot coming from the opposite direction taking the racing line as you go into a bend... We stayed in Catania because we arrived late afternoon and it was nearby. You could just as easily drive about an hour down to Syracuse and stay there for a night or two - nice place anyway. Or up to Taormina - make sure you get a room facing Etna! We didn't do it, but you can drive to Etna and then hike to the rim.
Piazza Armenia is the Roman Palace. Caltanissetta might have been the name of the place on top of the mountain - it's almost dead centre of the island.
