My mistake was in giving the example, seeing as you have no context. Despite the tongue-in-cheek joke about the crowded pub we never made the joke in such an environment. This chap was my flat-mate and the whole joke started when we saw an old newsreel film from the colonial days with some t**t explaining exactly why Indians were wogs and not niggers (apparently "wogs" were considered more British (and therefore better) than "niggers"). The newsreel then moved on to an old Indian chap who proudly announced himself as a wog and spoke quite disdainfully about niggers. We laughed our heads off at the irony, and the joke was born. But it was never said in inappropriate environments as some people, like you, would miss the context and obviously make assumptions.
