Why sign a striker?

Even if we lost Earnie would striking be our weakest department? We would still have Dublin, Huckerby, Martin, Brown, Renton and Jarvis.
What we have done - in the case of Varney, Sharp, and even Simpson, is push the price our rivals have had to pay.
