Well, if I recall correctly, they were

Albeit pinned down by the Turks, lack of intelligence of the terrain and especially the lack of supplies (especially fresh water). If I also recall correctly, it was a massive f**k up by that great war time leader, Winston Churchill.

If I'm not mistaken, the Turks lost more men than the Brits, French, Kiwis or Aussies put together.
