Borussia Moenchengladbach have signed Thomas Helveg from Norwich City. The 34 year old defender signed a two year contract on Wednesday with VfL. Helveg played with Odense BK until December 1993(103 games, 4 goals in the Danish 1st Division), then he played for Udinese FC from January 1994 until 1998, then from 1998 to 2003 he was with AC Milan before crossing the city to Internationale for a year (in the Serie A he played 270 games altogether scoring 6 goals) and he then went to Norwich City from 2004 to 2005 (20 Premiership games).
He played for Denmark 95 times(2 goals) and is Captain of the team. "Thomas Helveg is a man with lots of International experience and can play in various defensive positions," said Manager Peter Pander. "He will definately be able to help us and we are happy he has given us the nod."
Following the signing Thomas had this to say:
"...it was my clear wish to transfer to Moenchengladbach in the Bundesliga. I am very happy that it went ahead. I am very new here but I have said hello to the squad and had a look round the Stadium and training ground. It is great, the people are nice and my first impression is very good."
"...I am not yet thinking of quitting, on the contrary, I have two years on my contract with VfL and when that is at an end then I will look again. I would like to play in the World Cup next year when it is possible for Denmark. At the moment I want to get Borussia into a good League position."
"...Ulrik le Fevre, my agent, and Morton Olsen had advised me to take Borussia's offer. Ulrik told me about his time here before. Previously there had been no Dane in Moenchengladbach even though lots had been lined up and I wanted to continue this tradition."
"...naturally I can help the team and the youngsters through my experience but that is why I am no longer the boss on the field. I have not yet trained with the squad so I do not know the types of people on the pitch. I do not know which role I will take yet but I should do in a couple of weeks."
"...I am happy with the trust placed in me which brought me here. We want to build a good team and I want to help achieve this."
"...I played a year at AC Milan with Christian Ziege and I have good memories of that time. I also know my countryman Kasper Boegelund and it is great to meet them again here."
