The old centre is very busy with tourists, but if you get out of

town it is very quiet. We drove from Holland - an evening in Graz, Austria, then onto Plitvice with its stunning national park (lovely place to stay too), then down through Bosnia to Dubrovnik for a week and camped by the sea. Did the boat trip in an old wooden fishing boat around the islands (loved it) with freshly caught fish meal, then drove back up to a quiet national park near Zadar where we stayed for a few days.

Then drove up for a couple of days in Bled national park in Slovenia with a trip to Lubljana thrown in. That was very different (more western) but still lovely. And we finished it off with a weekend in my fave place Venice and drove back through Switzerland and Germany.
