I don't read it like that and it would be f**king ridiculous to have paid in one go

It would have made him better off by the interest value of 550k for 11 months ... actually it's a bit more complicated than that but there would be a serious time value to him in getting the whole lot early, and a corresponding disadvantage to us, so let's hope not.
