we DID spend in the summer

presumably we thought Bentley (generally considered at the time a FANTASTIC coup to get him) and Jonson would score rather more goals than they actually did. The problem wasn't that we didn't spend enough (our problems now are partly due to spending TOO MUCH trying to stay up and then get back up last year) but that the signings didn't really work out.

That is a combination of bad management (Doherty seemed to be a panic buy after we put all our egg's in Primus's basket) and bad luck (even top quality managers make bad signings that don't work out - it is quite common) but not really lack of ambition. After all, Reading were more prudent than us...

We didn't have more money to spend than we actually did. We all love to rip Ipswich for bad management but then a lot of fans seem to be suggesting we do what they did (spend money you don't have in the hope it will work out) only with less justification (they had, after all, just come 5th)
