between a civilian being captured by terrorists and soldiers being captured by a state. A state is never have the nerve to do anything seriously bad to captured soldiers outside wartime because they know that the eyes of the world are on them.
I've just read a book about the commando raids on the Nazi heavy water plant in Norway. One of the raids went wrong and some of the commandos were captured, already badly injured from a plane crash. The Nazis wanted to find out what their target was (they had crashed a hundred miles away from the plant) and their plan. They wouldn't say. So the Gestapo stuck red hot irons in their wounds, stamped on their broken legs, pulled their teeth out and injected air bubbles into their veins. They died in agony. Not one of them gave away the mission. They were ordinary blokes in their late teens and early 20s.
