is that today's athlete-footballers would beat the unfit skill merchants of the past easily in any matchup.

Maybe another way of looking at it is that players of the past weren't actually more skillful than today's, but only appeared that way because the slow pace of the game then allowed them time to do those fancy tricks we remember so well.
