That's bulls**t

He was very clear why he turned down the job. It was the FA who f**ked up. He agreed to consider an offer IF it was made AFTER the World Cup so he could concentrate on Portugal and see out his contract there (he would decide on a new one or not post-WC). He also wanted no distractions for the players during the WC.

The FA ignored his wishes and went public before the WC that they had offered him the job. He is a man of principle and said no.

Had they waited, McClaren would be getting Middlesborough relegated at the moment.
