Was a bit of a Kent fan when I was a boy (because I was a wicketkeeper and Allan Knott was at Kent). I remember he came into the England side against Australia in the mid-70s when Lillee & Thompson were ripping us apart and ground out a century (was that the series when George Davis protesters dug up the wicket at Headingley?). Then he went to Packer's circus and, if I recall correctly (and to his discredit), *that* South African tour.
But, you're right - an even better coach (arguably the most innovative) than player; but I include that in my assessment.
