Today we've all watched images of damage and injury in my city of London. And for days from now, the tv, radio and newspapers, and our conversations with friends and families, will be full of details of death and injuries, and of speculation on the causes, culprits and repurcussions.
All this is inevitable in our total-information age.
But before we get too immersed in convincing ourselves that this was a life-changing event - just remember....
our grandparents, and the grandparents of our European cousins, were conscripted into armies, were slaughtered in their thousands on battlefields, while their wives, children and parents lived under blitzkriegs and blanket bombing.
Today a few cowards left a handful of bags of explosives on a handful of train platforms. And managed to kill or injure hundreds of Londoners.
What's our response to that? I and millions of others followed the example of our predecessors and went to work in the centre of London today, did a day's work, and after that went home. And tomorrow, and next week, and next month, we'll get on the train as millions did today, go to work, enjoy bits of it, wish we weren't at work for the rest of it, eat over-priced lunches, flirt with our colleagues, skive off a bit, go to the pub after work, and and CARRY ON.
People like the perpetrators of today's bombs won't change our behaviour ONE IOTA. And if anyone on here thinks it should - thinks we should be scared of living in cities, should avoid getting on with our lives - shame on you.
