Does that mean we weren't fighting?

Without their money, munitions, scientists and ultimately men, giving their lives in a continent that wasn't their own, we'd have lost to Hitler. If Hitler had then lost to Stalin (which he probably wouldn't, given that there would have been no war in Africa and no invasion of Italy in 1943, never mind D-day), we'd have ended up as a satellite state of the Russian empire. I really do not think it is sensible to belittle the US contribution to saving Western European civilisation.
