Were they? I'm in the 13th month of an 18 month mobile contract at the moment.

I haven't got any reason to want to leave the contract, but it'd be interesting if I could.

Similarly when PlusNet first launched their ADSL packages in 2000 their 12 month contracts came with penalty clauses for early cancellation, and I'm pretty sure they weren't alone in that, in the industry. Not sure how things have changed since, mind.
