... You think THAT's long? I've just discovered a 199-word long sentence (ie. an entire paragraph) in a piece I wrote on Newcastle some months back! Even I'm pretty flabbergasted by this - I can hardly believe a 199-word sentence is even possible. So I guess you could call this progress - well, of a sort, anyway...
What's interesting to me, though, is the aforementioned article was far and away my most successful so far: it was linked to in a number of places, and Magpies fans really liked it. I think the moral is that as long as I do a good job with a big topic, then there's no problem with my being wordy: in general, fans seem pretty happy to read anything about their club, and if the argument is good, it goes down well.
Pretentious? Hmm, not sure to be honest. Possibly - I guess all I can do is write as naturally as possible, and see what results. Incidentally, I'm intrigued that for all your criticisms, you consider this my best yet - because it's my shortest yet. And that was partly because of noting your previous critique (ditto, when you correctly moaned about my tendency to sound like a broken record ranting on about the same old thing). So I'm listening - and at this rate, maybe you'll end up as my Mr 15%! Stranger things have happened... (that horse becoming Pope, for one). *
