But they still need some exercise. Dell and a few others, in their infinite wisdom, have built life timers into some of their more modern batteries to ensure that they shut themselves down after so many power cycles, forcing you to buy a new battery even though there may be absolutely nothing wrong with the old one! Then people realised that you could reset the counter either by using a special cable and software or by dismantling the battery and unsoldering the board from the cells for a few minutes!
