Chase was a bit different - he sailed very close to the wind financially

Sutton, ultimately, was sold to pay off the bank. He thought we could, forever, find cheap players and sell them on for a big profit a couple of seasons later. He didn't, I don't think, realise just how much football was changing - remember we got relegated just as the first big money contract was signed with Sky. And his debt was all short term, which is why we were very nearly bankrupted.

Then again, the debt we had then is about a third (if I recall correctly - 6m?) of our (albeit longer term) debt we appear to have now.
