'quiche' comes from the german kuche (cake)

french in origin, it's normally eggs in a pastry case.

flan comes from the same root as 'flat' and is also french - it's normally a sweet 'egg custard' without pastry.

But you can have a savoury flan if you want, just like you can have a savoury cake.
